HDR-TD20V

If you were put off by the size of the HDR-TD10 then this camera may be all you need to embrace Sony’s 3D. But if you already own the TD-10, there may not be enough “new” to warrant putting your old camera up on ebay. That said, there is a higher resolution image and the camera of course includes Sony’s “double full HD 3D” (i.e. two HD sensors – one for each image). There is also a new “active mode” steady shot that actually allows the lens to float in the housing. If you shoot a lot of active [...]

Define Parallax

Parallax is one of those words that you may think you can define because of the way it sounds. Certainly we all know what a parallel line is. However parallax refers to quite a different concept. Parallax is a geometrical term that is often used in Astronomy, visual perception, photography, and is even used as a literary metaphor. If you have recently purchased, or are in the market for a 3D camcorder, you may have heard the world parallax bounced around as you have educated yourself about 3D. But let’s cut to the facts.

Parallax Defined: Parallax is the apparent [...]

Aiptek DDD21X 12 MP Camera vs. Aiptek 3D-HD

Aiptek offers two 3D camcorders the Aiptek 3D-HD (also known as the i2) and the DDD21X 12 MP (also known as the iS2). The i2 3D-HD model is geared toward 3D video shooters, the iS2 DDD21X  shoots both stills and video, but it is angled toward those for whom stills are of primary importance. Here are the differences that you need to understand between these two cameras. You may be surprised at the results.

The iS2 DDD21X is advertised as being a 12MP camera. The camera actually uses two 5MP sensors (the i2 3D-HD only has one 5MP sensor). [...]

Panasonic Camera: H-FT012

Panasonic recently released the Lumix DMC-GF3 camera and if you are somewhat familiar with Lumix line you may wonder why it is being reviewed on a website that focuses exclusively on 3D video cameras. The interesting aspect to the DMC is that it accepts a variety of interchangeable lenses, including a 3D lens. Further, the camera shoots both stills AND video so it qualifies.

This camera line has generally appealed to a mid to high end set of users – primarily photographers. The cameras are tiny in form for the generous sensor size that they offer. Bigger sensors [...]

Panasonic 3D Wins Award

3D technology received yet another seal of validation when the Panasonic 3D camcorder AG-3DA1 was selected to receive an R&D 100 award for 2011. If you have never heard of the R&D 100 don’t feel bad, I hadn’t either. However, they are known as the “Oscars of Innovation” by those in the know. They recognize the technologies that are the most innovative and are predicted to have the most impact in the years ahead.

Panasonic’s 3D camera offering stands in good company. Prior recepients of this award include:

The photographic flashcube in 1965 The ATM (1973 – who knew!) [...]

Prosumer 3D Camcorders On the Way

If you know your camcorder history you may recall the Sony VX1000. The VX1000 was vanguard of a new class of camcorders that offered pro features at a consumer price. Back in 1995 that little workhorse opened up pro movie making to thousands who never could have afforded it otherwise.

Flash forward to today’s revolution in 3D movie-making. There is no current 3D camcorder that qualifies as ‘prosumer’. How do I define prosumer?  For example: XLR sound inputs (to allow professional mics to be used), zebra indicators (for calibrating exposure), higher quality lenses, etc. And of course available at a [...]

DXG 5F9V and more…3D options even Grandma will love

In 2010 DXG released their 5D7V 3D camcorder to generally favorable reviews. This year the company is following up with not one, but three new 3D contentders. The 5F9V arrives in June with a $299 SRP. This 3D camcorder shoots in 1080p and sports a rotating dual-lens system that offers a “binocular mode” that can capture images on a horizontal plane. The camera features a 3-inch glasses free parallax barrier 3D display and records video and stills in 2D or 3D.

Later in the year (September) DXG will release a 3D pocket cam – the 5G2. The camera includes [...]

3D Video

Whether or not you have a 3D TV there are plenty of ways to watch 3D video online. It helps if you own a pair of 3D glasses (the cheap red and blue ones work just fine for content on YouTube) or you can even make your own 3D glasses without too much difficulty.

There is also the option to watch glassesless 3D on YouTube without purchasing any additional equipment!

Click on the 3D pull-down menu in YouTube and select ‘cross eyed’ (if it doesn’t show up immediately click ‘other options). Cross your eyes until the two white dots [...]

Make Your Own 3D Glasses

What You Need:

• Heavy duty cardboard or poster board • Xacto knife or scissors (careful!) • Tape (something stronger than scotch tape such as clear packing tape) • Glasses pattern (Download a PDF) • Red and blue acetate sheets from your friendly neighborhood art supply store.

First Step:

Cut out the sample pattern (don’t forget the eyeholes) for the 3D glasses and tape the sides to the center section. This is the stencil you will use for the actual glasses.

Second Step:

Trace the stencil on the cardboard or poster board. Cut the glasses out making sure to [...]

Night Vision Camcorder in 3D

Night vision camcorders allow you to shoot in pitch-darkness and still discern an image. One way of achieving this is by artificially increasing the “gain” of the image beyond what our eyes can process. Another way is by using an infrared light mounted on the front of the camera. Our eyes can’t see infrared, but the camera sensor can. This doesn’t need to be a specially designed sensor. All CMOS and CCD sensors can receive infrared light. It’s part of their design. The only downside to this technology is that the image is monochromatic.
